We believe we had about 30,000 visitors. We literally sold out of everything. I have to thank all of our Chair people for the great job they did. Corn Festival Chairman Roy, Car Raffle - Larry Spooner, Parade - Dick Prescott, Miss La Habra and her Court – Cindy Singer, Baby Contest - Kathy Felix, Carnival Rides - Cindy Singer, Corn Booth and the Corn Eating Contest - Dave Coffin, Finance Booth - Dan Casey, Funnel Cakes Booth - Tom Beamish, Ice Cream Booth - Stu Bruckner, Leo Coordinator - Alyce Lubs, Marketplace Area: Chuck Morse, Scott & Bobbi Olson with Mark Sturdevant, Procurement: Larry Milano and Mike Robertson, Public Relations: Mark Sturdevant, Sandwich Booth - Mike Robertson and Soda Booth - Larry Rottweiler. Everyone did a great job.
For the first time we had a Baby Contest – Lion Kathy had about 23 entries. Lion Dave had quite a Corn Eating Contest. The winner from the first day came back on day two, but we had another winner. Both were so successful, that I’m sure we will have these new contests again next year. Lion Frank Felix has sold the winning ticket for the car 4 out of the last 5 years. The winner came right over to celebrate.
We had an outstanding Queen and Court this year. I would like to thank Queen Emilee Marshall, Princess Lyndsey Heidrich, Princess Mindy Lee, Princess Bernadette Green and Princess Angela Presentadi., and their coach, mother hen, watchdog – Lion Cindy Singer. And Lion Alyce Lubs for the outstanding group of Leos who helped in almost every booth. The Leos even served us strawberry shortcake at the meeting. Thank you all.
This event cannot happen without all of our many volunteers, families and Lions. You all did an amazing job.
When you are out and about – please be sure and thank our good advertisers and the Chamber of Commerce for their support of the Corn Festival. Northgate Market, Goodwill Industries of O.C., American First Credit Union, Younan Mediterranean Terrace, Memory Garden Memorial Park & Mortuary and Pacific Community Credit Union – and the continuing support sponsors for their in kind donations and time – Albertson’s, Don Steves Chevrolet, Graham’s Towing, Home Depot, JD’s Tires and La Habra Journal.
Which brings me to our After the Corn Festival Party. Our Procurement Team Lion Larry Milano and Lion Mike Robertson did such a good job; there was not any food left. Usually we have the party with the food that is left. Therefore, we are going to combine it with our Charter Night Party – this is our Birthday. Be sure and invite your volunteers. Charter Night will be at Lion Carmen Henderson’s home.
At our Tuesday night meeting, Lion Larry Spooner actually got to present the keys to the Raffle Car to the winner – Curtis Kress. Don and Dina Steves from Don Steves Chevrolet were present. This may be the first time we have actually got to present the winner with the keys at our meeting.
Lion Kathy Felix is promoting a membership drive in September. Please bring your friends and associates. Lion Dave Hubbard from Huntington Beach Host Lions visited and gave us these membership hints.
The 10 “M’S” of Membership: Meet’em, Greet’em, Invite’em, Welcome’em, Ask’em, Sign’em, Induct’em, Orient’em, Involve’em and Retain’em.
Lions help to conserve sight by providing usable eyeglasses to children and adults throughout the world. Donated eyeglasses can help millions to experience corrected vision for the first time, enabling them to read, attend school, gain employment and take care of their families. Eyeglass recycling is one of the Lions' most popular activities. This month, Lion Phyllis Bailey turned in 894 pair of used glasses. Many people donated the glasses and she also collected them from the collection box at the Community Center, Presbyterian Hospital , Gwen Weston from Presbyterian Church, Wal-Mart and from people in our Club.
September 8, we are looking forward to our visit from District Governor Judy Schnitzer. Her theme: Light the Path for Service”. Lions - that is what WE do best – SERVE.
The Corn Festival was one of our best ever. Many thanks to all of you and our wonderful volunteers.

Our club was chartered in 1947. Soon after, the members began by putting on a dance and cook out that has become a very large and successful fund raising event, the La Habra Corn Festival now in its 60th year. Each year the festival allows the club and many other groups in La Habra to raise funds to help those in need in our community.
Our club is made up of men and women, not only from La Habra, but from many different communities who have an interest in furthering the goals of our club and our city.
In 2005, the club formed the La Habra Host Lions Foundation. The Foundation is now the fundraising and dispersing arm of the Club. All donations made to the Foundation are tax-deductible as the Foundation is recognized by the federal government as a 501(C)3 corporation.
